Shark fishing

Hi, my name is Eddie and I visit Galveston several times a year to fish but have never fished there past sept. I had some good luck surf fishing for sharks but but my set up was to small and had some bite through my leaders. I've up graded to a 9/0 penn and was wondering what test should I spool it with? I'm going to be back in nov. and I was wondering if its possible to shark fish the surf this late in the year if you kayak your bait out ? Any help would be appreciated.
