  • West Galveston Bay -- 8/10/12 - 8/12/12

    Here's a quick report:

Went kayak fishing near the Galveston Island State Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I knew it was going to be a grind in the southwest winds with slack tide in the mornings, but decided to go anyway. Fished exclusively with Gulp pogys and 4" shrimp in pearl white and 6" Jerk Shad in chartreuse pepper neon glow. Jigheads used were 1/8th oz and 1/4 oz, depending on the wind velocity. Overall, the bite was slow, but some quality fish were caught each day. Most of the fish were released, except for some trout and 1 flounder that were caught this morning. I stayed along protected shorelines and fished tight to some geotubes and spartina grass to catch the flounder and redfish. Caught the trout drift fishing sand bottom in about 3 feet of water. Slicks were popping up everywhere later in the mornings.

    Final tally:

    Friday - 3 flounder from 17" to 20.5" and a solid 27.5" red

The flounder and red were caught on a slow retrieve while constantly bouncing the lure off the bottom. Most of the hits happened very close to the geotubes.

The trout were caught with a medium speed retrieve and a twitch or two of the rod tip every couple seconds. Most of the hits were on the downfall of the lure. Around the small slicks, the trout hit the lure almost immediately as it hit the water.
