  • Little Uglies

I went to one of my flounder holes for the early spring run and fished the tide change today and as soon as the tide went slack I felt a thump. I thought it was on for sure. I set the hook got the net out and started reeling the fish in. It wasn't fighting all that hard so I thought it was a little pan cake flounder. Ha I was wrong it was a 10" toad fish.

I turned the fish loose, switched my lure color and got back at it. 2 more casts into the trip I got thumped again. The fish felt real heavy and then it started moving so I set and the fish felt pretty good. I thought for sure this time it was a flounder because it was digging down towards the bottom and I could feel the fish trying to spit the hook.

Wrong again it was another toad fish. It was bigger this time probably about 14". I was getting a little discouraged at this point. There are bottom dwelling fish there hitting so I stayed and that was the wrong decision. The tide started ripping in and all I was hooking into were toads. All felt like flounder due to the current. The flounder must be up in the marsh already because this spot has been a very productive spot for me this time of year according to my log books.

I've been there 4 times this month and have only got on them once and that is rare for this spot this time of year.

Yeah you have fun kissing one of those toads. I don't even touch them ugly guys. I just shake them off the hook.

Found them feeding on little shad close to the Pass...I suspect they are there too. Incoming tide, and fish the edges should produce! Pretty good size to the ones we caught yesterday. Red and white paddles worked the best, but they also hit a maniac mullet and a glow/chart devil eye.

If it smells like fish....you know I've been there!
