Went out today in search of some trout and reds. I was looking to go to the sand pit on highland bayou since it is a nice deep hole but the winds out of the east north east forced me to change my plans when I arrived at the boat ramp so I decided to go to the diversionary near harbor walk. I launched the yak under the bridge and paddled down about a mile and set up off a cluster of shell and started throwing a 1/8oz. with a glow/chart. rip tide shrimp. I was casting towards the middle of the channel and working it back very slow as soon as it hit the water. I was getting the slightest bumps so when I felt the bump I would lift the rod tip up ever so slightly and then the fish would thump it. The first hook up I thought for sure I had a flounder but it was a rat red that got wrapped in the line and swimming sideways. This went on for about an hour. I would get rat red after rat red all from the same mother. All fat and right at 12 inches. Last years hatch. So I decided to switch it up and put on a 1/16oz. with a white/pink curly tail and right at the time I switched the tide switched and started coming in. This got the bait fish active and I started seeing some boils and some blow ups. I decided to make a drift since it was starting to get late and the wind was pushing me back towards the truck. I was casting with the wind and moving basically reeling in just fast enough to not have slack in my line. Four casts in and I caught the only keeper of the day a fat 19" speck. She was fighting kind of lethargic so I didn't think she was all that big until I got her to the top. She was barely hooked in the corner of the mouth and I didn't have a net so I had to wear her down and gently cradle her to her in the kayak. I made about 8 more casts and picked up two dinks and by that time I was back to the truck. I called it a day at 5pm. Reds on the outgoing and specks on the incoming.
The picture is a picture off of my dads waterproof camera that I took with my cell phone so when he sends me the pic I will upload it.

I went out again on Monday after work and picked up where I left off on Sunday afternoon. I switched to a flats minnow in texas roach with a 1/8oz. jig head. Working it as slow as I could over the shell picking up rat reds on the outgoing for the first hour then the tide switched and I started picking up trout. Didn't get any solid fish this time but it was still better then sitting in traffic.Son of the Republic
