Weekend Report 5-15

Got out on the water both Saturday and Sunday. Late starts left us leaving the dock around noon each day. Sat turned out to be a little windy, but provided some interesting drifts around Deer Island. Used live shrimp under a popping cork since I had some inexperienced fishers onboard. Ended up working out OK, caught a few undersized trout, and a couple keepers up to 18". Lots of gafftop and croaker, even a sheepshead. The tide was low and I got a good idea of where those reefs around there are located now. Sunday started out breezy and we decided to fish the same area. Got a couple keepers in the box, and then decided to venture on into West Bay(my first time heading west of Deer Island). Ended up making it all the way to Caranchua reef, but didnt see much happening there. Attempted a drift around the spoil islands, but the wind had died which made getting around near impossible. Heading back, got south of the reefs that run west of south deer island. Glare on the water and no wind equaled lots of trolling to find a spot to get across them. Not a bad weekend for exploring the area and catching a few nice fish. I have a feeling that getting a good grasp on navigating west bay might take baby steps. But any day on the water, is a vacation from my problems(anybody who has seen "What About Bob" will get what I'm saying). Heading down to the Laguna Madre to fish with the padres this weekend, an area which I am more familiar with. Will try to post some pics next time!
