  • GISP 3/23/11 a day of firsts!

Walked in yesterday at 5PM and started with topwater: nothing
    changed to soft plastic: Nothing
Changed to spoon: rat red around 15"
worked the spoon until dark and nothing.

    Firsts for me:
    1) saw a tailing red! what an AWESOME site. For those who have fished GISP: you know those two little (about 2 ft in diameter) grass patches along the left side of the channel? thats where I saw the tail sticking straight up. SO COOL!!

    2) Red on a topwater: walking in right after sun went down and all I hear is.. bloomp... CRASH around the grassline in 1ft of water. switched to spook jr chart/black head and had a huge blowup. tossed it in the same spot and had a little backlash so I stripped some line and as I reeled in the slack I thought my topwater was stuck on something. WRONG!!! the line started peeeeeeling like crazy. After a good fight in the dark I got it in. BIG FAT 26in red. I was laughing to myself in delight as I had never caught a red in that shallow of water, let alone on a top water. I decided to let her go for another day.

I know she wasnt the only one around because during the fight, there were multiple big big blow ups in a 30 yard area around me. unfortunately, i forgot the skeeter spray and wind was 0MPH around the grass line and they were comin on THICK.

Drove over to Laffites to check out some lights... landed 3 22in+ fat trout caught on the hackberry hustler (my new favorite) and the same colored super spook (chart black head). There were so many trout and reds in the light that I was actually pulling my topwater away from small schoolies (didnt want to spook the whole light for a little guy)

All in all... GREAT afternoon despite the less than stellar day-bite.

Its days like yesterday that keep me commin back!! I love it!

Awesome!! That area was devoid of fish in the early part of the day. Gotta love sunsets this time of the year.

10-4 on that.. Its hard not to stand in one spot during the day when theres so much bait around. Gets frustrating.
