Galveston Bay -- 6/28/13 & 6/30/13
Well, I made a couple fishing trips to the Galveston Bay system on Friday and Sunday and did pretty good both days. The water level was really low both days and the tides were very weak. Definitely an early morning bite (probably good around sunset too).
Upper Galveston Bay - 6/28/13
Launched my kayak around sunrise only to find the water gone. Had to drag my kayak a little further...
Started off the day throwing a Gulp 5" Jerk Shad in chartreuse along a short stretch of shoreline riprap. Made a couple drifts along the shoreline, just jigging the bait fast enough to not get hung up in the rocks.
Ended up catching a solid upper slot red.
Couldn't catch anymore reds, so I moved over to a few flounder holes. Gulps were attracting too many junk fish, and the tails were getting bit off after a cast or two. So, I switched over to a H&H red and white curly tail and started fan casting along the bulkhead. It was a grind to say the least.
I was about to give up and head back in, when the weak incoming tide finally started trickling in about 10:00 AM. The flounder started biting, but still had to work for them. After catching and releasing a few undersized fish, I picked up 4 keeper-sized flounder in the heat of the day.
Finished off the day by catching and releasing a hefty 22" flounder around 11:00 AM.
After that, I was exhausted from the heat and ran out of water and gatorade so called it quits at noon.
West Galveston Bay - 6/30/13
Wanted to try another area, so decided to head down to West Bay and fish near the Galveston Island State Park. Launched at 5:00 AM and made the long and arduous paddle into a northwest wind. Anchored up on a sand flat and soaked some croaker. No fancy set-up, just free-lined them.
Around sunrise, the winds died off and the bite turned on. No slicks, no tidal movement, however the trout were biting hot and heavy, with lot's of drag peeling action. Ended up retaining a limit of trout from 18"-23". Was able to beat the heat and got off the water by 7:45 AM.
