  • Upper Galveston Bay & GSC -- 5/4/13 - 5/5/13

The strong west and north west winds made it interesting both days. Fishing out of a kayak during windy conditions, really made me pick my spots carefully. The flounder are definitely moving into their summer pattern.

Decided to fish a couple spots in upper Galveston Bay in the afternoon. I targeted flounder along protected shorelines from sunrise until about noon. Tide didn't switch until about 10:00 AM, which got the flounder feeding for a brief period. Targeted the flounder with H&H red/white curly tails and Gulp mantis shrimp. Had to stick with curly tails that were non-scented, since the junk fish were out there in full force...

The only fish I caught on the Gulp mantis shrimp was a fatty 23" slot red.

Every now and then, I'll catch some "special" flounder, such as brown on both sides... caught one again this weekend.

Didn't land any saddles, most of the fish were around 17-19 inches.

The stiff northwest winds changed my plans for going back out to upper Galveston Bay. The tide was very low in the morning so I went over to Galveston Ship Channel and fished another flounder spot with some finger mullet. Water clarity wasn't too bad despite the north winds. I just Carolina rigged the mullet and bottom fished in about 10 feet of water along pier pilings.

No flounder, but picked up a limit of upper slot reds. The tricky part was ripping the fish out of the pilings. Once they turned their head down it was game over. The 3 reds I landed all got me wrapped up in the barnacle-covered pilings; however, the Sufix 832 (50 lb) held up nicely to the abuse.

I have never seen a flounder like that. Any reason for the cause of this? Thanks for sharing.

Genetic anomaly. It's a piebald. Happens every now and then in most all animals but it's rare. Barlow had a pic of a piebald flounder published in a magazine a few years ago. I've only ever seen one piebald flounder in person in 40 years.

            Great report...

What depth of water do you target for catching flounder in the summer?

I've been focusing on areas that have any kind of structure in about 2 feet of water or less, with a gradual dropoff away from that structure, to about 6' water depth. Structure could be anything from oyster reefs, spartina grass, pilings, rip rap, or bulkheads.

IMO, tide changes and locating protected water with bait along these drop offs are more critical than a certain depth. My favorite time to flounder fish in the summer is days when the change from slack low tide to incoming occurs around sunrise or sunset.
