Got a late start with Cameron this morning. On the water at around 8:40ish. Target of the day were big uglies, AKA: Black Drum. We found a nice channel and anchored. Threw out some cracked crab and waited. While waiting, I picked up a little over 15 inch trout on a hackberry in morning glory. Soon, Cameron pointed to my rod and it was slightly bouncing. Picked up the rod, felt the weight and set the hook. The line started peeling off as the giant went straight for the bottom. Cameron, being the jealous person he is, got a knife and cut the line... Ok, he didn't really do that. As I was putting pressure on the fish, I felt some rocks and then....the line got cut by the shell on the bottom. I reset, completely agitated that I lost my fish.
Soon, however, there were bulkheads across the channel that were brimming with bait. We picked up and headed off over there. First few casts for me yielded some decent trout on the hackberry. We then saw there was a lot more bait under the surface so i put on a rattle-trap and hap a nice strike. All this time, Cameron couldn't get a hit. The action died suddenly and we worked the bulkheads looking for stragglers. Cameron ended up picking out one more trout. We did see a nice tailing red about 50-60 yds from us, but when we got closer, we lost track of him. After working the bulkheads, which yielded no more fish, we then went back towards the ramp and tried one more spot for drum. We set up and within 15 minutes, Cameron had a strike. He waited a bit too long to set the hook and when he did, the fish took off for some pilings, cutting him off. Final tally of the day was 3 trout between 17-18 (we released all of the 15 inchers) and 0 drum.
Not too bad of a day though!
