  • Baytown Nature Center - 9/16

I launched my kayak off the road in the Baytown Nature Center this morning about 7:00a. The tide was was on the backside of the high and generally slack. Wind was ENE at 8-10 early and swung around to ESE through the morning.

I fished the Crystal Bay shoreline, then out to the spoil bank on the ICW, then back to Scott Bay. Picked up one speck off the Crystal Bay shoreline in 3' to 4' of water. Nothing on the spoil islands and then three more at Wooster Point. I saw bait all morning but Wooster Point was holding big pods of finger mullet and that's where I got most of my fish.

I threw the box at them today. Couldn't get a blow up on any topwaters. Tried TTF Hackberry Hustlers and Killer Flats Minnows in a variety of colors. The only thing I could catch them on was TTF Red Killers - one on strawberry and white; three on the muddy brown one with red flecks. Fished my way back to the car and was out of the water about 1p. Tide was starting to drop pretty hard.

On the way back in, I saw an enormous drum in about 12" of water. Its back was half out of the water at times and was easily 30" long. That was cool. Sorry I couldn't get a picture.

All specks were keepers. Shortest was about 16"; biggest was 18"+. I took pictures and let 'em go. That was my first trip to BNC. I'll try it again.

And the piece of resistance....the trout that ate San Jacinto.

        Sweet trip
I never saw a wild thing feel sorry for itself. A small baby bird will fall frozen, dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself...
