It's a little different down here on SPI, where there's hardly any bait in the surf, and just a few runt whiting. I think the ted tide and fish fills from last year year wiped out the bait, hundreds of tons of it. Then we get the tourists on the weekends so you can forget about fishing unless you go more then 10 miles up the beach in a 4WD. So we're kind of in wait mode and it usually gets better into the June-October fish runs.

I agree that about a 1 to 2-foot wave face makes it nice because you can see into the water, and we're looking for bait like jacks, herring, mullet, and so forth. Flat calm means no beach current, hardly any moving bait, and tons of "trout green" fishermen, lol. Actually, our best water is a sandy blue color, which can bring the bait and Spanish macks and tarpon closer into shore. They like faster water, I suspect, but I'm still learning how to read them guts because the beach seems to change every day. Oh well, our seaweed season is about over now, long as the wind stays to the south - we always get seaweed if the wind has any north and east in it. -sammie on spi

Super Spook - You have a point...if you wait around for pristine conditions, you'll barely get to fish. I too have hopped many a wave and still come out with something on the stringer...as long as the water is somewhat "clean". You don't have to wait till it's green-to-the-beach to catch fish. But, I simply won't make the drive down if the water is too dirty. Maybe I'm not as skilled or lucky as others, but I've been skunked too many times fishing in chocolate milk and crawled home with my tail between my legs.

not to mention elbow to elbow with 500 other people on the "pristine" days. i hate that also. Also sooooo many times i see a line of waders fishing the second gut (because thats where everyone else is i guess). sometimes they walk right over the fish that are in the gut between the beach and first bar (usually in the morning) they also never do the one leg hop out to the third bar (which is where i alsmost always find the fish in the evening)

nice site here. i just wanted to give my .02. every year i read, hear, see people making up every excuse for why today isnt the good day to get in the surf for trout. its to windy, to rough, seaweed, sharks, rays. and on and on and on. when the trout move into the surf they are there ALWAYS. maybe not in your specific spot but always in the surf somewhere. they dont follow the green water everywhere. i have caught trout in the surf during this time of year in EVERY condition imaginable. the green flat calm days are what the fishermen look for not the fish. granted its 100x easier to catch fish when its actually easy to fish but if you get your grind on you can locate and catch trout in almost any condition. i LOVE 2-3ft waves more than a flat slack surf. i have always done better that way. just get out there when you can and adjust your approach to catch the fish. here was wednesday evening in front of the beach house in chocolate milk with sea weed everywhere. took me about an hour of switching bars and moving around until i got on some.

i heard that, doesnt matter the what the conditions are. i like it better to when its a little rough,seem to catch more fish and better size to them. if its to rough to throw lures use live mullet. nice first post.
